Anash: The Rebbe Saw East Flatbush’s Potential 64 Years Ago
Newly published letters from 1962 reveal how the Rebbe personally took up the cause of this mikva. When construction stalled for lack of funds, the Rebbe reached out on his own initiative to a leading mikva philanthropist, urging that the project move forward without delay. Describing the neighborhood as one that “deserves special consideration,” the Rebbe saw its potential long before today’s families began returning. Now, more than six decades later, that same mikva is being rebuilt as Chayala’s Mikva, ready for its next chapter.
COLLIVE features Chayala’s Mikva
Crown Heights is celebrating the return of a beloved institution. Chayala’s Mikva, first established in the 1960s with the Rebbe’s support, is being rebuilt as a dedicated women’s center — open seven nights a week and designed for privacy, dignity, and comfort. The project, named in memory of Chayala, the founder’s sister, has already sparked excitement throughout the community.
